It’s spring already here in Charity Junction and my world has changed since the last time I wrote. It’s almost sunset now as I sit with Blue out on the front porch. There is so much I want to tell you—Mama still tells me I’m wasting my time with my pen but it’s like I always say: If I’m wasting my time, why did God give me the gift with my pen? One day I will leave this place and when I do, my voice will be heard. I will tell my story and change the world. That feeling keeps gnawing at my gut and it don’t never let me go.

So much has happened since I wrote the last time—now two months ago.

I am a child but somehow, God is making me understand that there is a purpose for me – and my life – whatever lies up ahead on that unseen road between Charity Junction and the rest of the world.

First of all, Papa is still not home—he is still in the maddening world of Hitler and Germany. He writes when he can and his letters are filled with sadness. He misses Mama and me. Sometimes he sends Mama five dollars and me a dollar. I hide my dollar under the feather bed to keep incase we need it for more food when Mama and me ain’t got nothing to eat.

There’s more to his letters, though, than missing me and Mama. He writes about the horrors of war and people that are being killed because of who they are and what they believe.

If you’ve read many of my letters, then you know how I feel about hating people for the color of their skin and because they’re different.

What a terrible man this Hitler is! Every night when me and Blue are covered up on the feather bed I talk to Jesus and ask Him to please stop this man from killing the Jews.

Me and Mama talked about it just today. We was in the kitchen cleaning up after Mama made us a few biscuits and my favorite red-eye gravy. Mama’s eyes often pool with tears and I know it’s cause she misses Papa. She loves him so!

We sat down near the wood stove and took my hand.

“Ebbie Catherine,” she said, “Your Papa don’t tell us all that’s going on over there in that war. He can’t. Hating people is wrong, Ebbie, you know that, but this man who is killing the Jews is doing something that’s well, against God.”

“Mama, why does he hate them? What did they do wrong?”

“Hate don’t care about a man’s color or a man’s religion, Ebbie. Hate is a bad seed deep inside a person’s soul. Always remember that when you open the door to evil and hatred, you change your soul. This man, Hitler, is an enemy to a person’s soul. There ain’t no reason, never no reason, do you hear me, for killing innocent people and killing people for who they are and what they believe.
